Gini Wijnaldum admits he initially thought he was on his way to Barcelona before Paris Saint-Germain convinced him to sign with a more appealing 'project'.

Liverpool had hoped to tie Wijnaldum down with an extension but the 30-year-old allowed his contract to run down on Merseyside and joined PSG on a free transfer earlier this week.

The midfielder - keen to resolve his future before Euro 2020 - had a change of heart once PSG stepped up their interest, with Mauricio Pochettino determined to bolster his midfield ranks ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

'PSG and Barcelona are both truly great clubs, and both are clubs where I would have liked to play.

Speaking to PSG's official website, Wijnaldum said he was intent on taking the team 'even further and higher' under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino.

'Signing for PSG is a new challenge for me,' he said.
