The Georgian goalkeeper officially joined from Valencia this summer for £29m, having agreed the deal in August 2024, but stayed in Spain for last season.
With Alisson’s contract ending next year, Liverpool moved early to secure Mamardashvili, fending off interest from Chelsea and Barcelona.
Alisson has been supportive, assisting him in training.
Giorgi Mamardashvili made his international debut for Georgia in September 2021,
He has since become a key figure for his country, starring at the 2024 European Championship with 21 group-stage saves, the joint-most in the tournament’s history.
Born in Tbilisi, Mamardashvili started his playing career at FC Gagra before moving to Dinamo Tbilisi.
He gained senior experience on loan at FC Rustavi and Locomotive Tbilisi.
Named Georgian Goalkeeper of the Year in 2020, his performances earned him a move to Valencia ahead of the 2021–22 season, initially on loan before the transfer was made permanent.
In his first season at Valencia, Mamardashvili helped the team reach the Copa del Rey final, starting in the penalty shootout loss to Real Betis.
He became the undisputed starter in his second season, breaking the club record for most consecutive La Liga appearances by a goalkeeper with 59 games in February 2024.
He finished 2023-24 with 13 clean sheets, setting a new club record.
Mamardashvili earned a nomination for the 2024 Yashin Trophy, finishing seventh, and was named Georgian Footballer of the Year, ending Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s streak.
According to the Daily Mail, Mamardashvili is expected to make his debut against Southampton in the Carabao Cup third round next Tuesday.
The 24-year-old has openly stated his ambition to compete for the top spot.
“I am going to Liverpool to fight for the No.
I don’t decide who plays and who doesn’t.”
