Celtic legend Chris Sutton has brutally trolled Rangers fans on social media after their first-half collapse in the Champions League against Club Brugge at Ibrox on Tuesday (19 August).

Rangers headed into the clash with a strong record in Europe under new boss Russell Martin that had seen them qualify for the play-off round against their Belgian opponents, but it all went wrong early on this time around.

The Gers’ evening got off to a terrible start as Nasser Djiga got mixed up in defence and Romeo Vermant was allowed to run free at Jack Butland before chipping it in for 1-0 after just three minutes.

Club Brugge extended their lead only four minutes later as Christos Tzolis’ whipped corner found Jorne Spileers, who calmly guided his first-time effort past Butland after being allowed the freedom of the penalty area.

There were just 20 minutes on the clock when the visitors put the score beyond doubt as centre-back Brandon Mechele rocketed a fine shot into the bottom-left corner for 3-0 to further incense the home support.

Rangers fans let their feelings be known after the second and third goals, as numerous supporters left their seats to walk out of the stadium, and they were mocked by Celtic hero Sutton to add insult to injury after a painful first half-hour.

The Hoops legend took to social media site X to poke fun at the Gers’ support, saying: “I thought Rangers fans don’t do walking away… 20 minutes in and many have given up already…”

The first 45 minutes left Rangers with a mountain to climb, and despite Danilo pulling a goal back shortly after the break there is still a long, long way to go.

Football Insider verdict

It would certainly be a shock to see Martin relieved of his duties this early on in his Rangers tenure, but things clearly do need to get better as soon as possible in all competitions, or he could well be facing the music soon.

The 39-year-old’s saving grace has been his side’s European form, after successive draws to start the new Scottish Premiership season, while Rangers scraped past Alloa in the Premier Sports Cup on Saturday (16 August) after their League One visitors had drawn level early on.

That cushion has now been snatched away by Brugge, and after new owners 49ers Enterprises took a gamble by appointing Martin, it is now being a decision that they may already be regretting.

There is still a long season ahead for all connected to the Gers, but their start has been less-than ideal so far with another setback against Brugge surely due to be set in stone soon, and he may well be relieved of his duties very soon unless things seriously improve.
