Jurgen Klopp was on the phone to an old friend in Germany when there was a knock on the door of his office at Liverpool’s new training ground in Kirkby on Thursday afternoon.

His grin apparently was a familiar one, stretching from ear to ear at the news that Pep Guardiola was staying at Manchester City for two more seasons.

“Good”, he replied.

“Good…” Good, of course, can sometimes be an important person’s way of meaning bad — or “oh, shit — I didn’t really expect that to happen.” Klopp, however, had anticipated Guardiola would remain a little longer in Manchester, not only because he is yet to collect at least one significant trophy for the first time in the club’s history, but because there had been no indication that City were preparing for someone else to take his place and in his mind anyway, there is nobody in the world more talented at management than Guardiola.
