Graeme Souness has advised Arne Slot to avoid repeating the same errors made by previous Dutch managers who moved to the Premier League in the past.
The 45-year-old is poised to be appointed as Jurgen Klopp’s successor at Liverpool following the agreement of a compensation package worth up to £9.4m with Feyenoord on Friday night.
Slot’s open desire to take charge at Anfield in recent days has not only garnered Klopp’s approval but also eased his departure from the club this summer.
He has been at the helm of Feyenoord since 2021, and last season he steered the club to its first Eredivisie title since 2017, finishing seven points ahead of PSV Eindhoven.
Although trailing PSV by nine points this term, Slot recently guided the Rotterdam outfit to Dutch Cup success with a 1-0 victory over NEC Nijmegen last weekend.
“After four titles with Ajax, Frank de Boer only lasted five games (at Crystal Palace), Ronald Koeman was at the bottom when Everton fired him and Ten Hag has not been a success at United either,” Souness wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.
“Slot should not make the same mistakes.
It has been proven that the gap from the Eredivisie to the Premier League is immense.”
Graeme Souness also suggests that Erik ten Hag’s challenging season with Manchester United should temper expectations surrounding Slot’s arrival at Liverpool.
“My greatest concern if Arne Slot is the man to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool is not his relative inexperience, but more so the Dutch league he is coming from,” Souness added.
“We only have to look at how Erik ten Hag has fared up the road at Manchester United to learn the pitfalls of a manager who puts his trust in players who were very good in the Eredivisie.
‘Ten Hag thought so much of his Ajax winger Antony that Man United paid £82 million for him, and he has been a major disappointment?
“There are others at Old Trafford and beyond – Donny van de Beek, Andre Onana, Lisandro Martínez, Memphis Depay, Hakim Ziyech and Davy Klaassen, all players with big reputations who have not cut it in our league after starring in Holland.”
