Graeme Souness tips Real Madrid to sign Liverpool star who is 'obviously unhappy'

Graeme Souness is concerned that Virgil van Dijk is unconvinced by Arne Slot and will seek a move away from Liverpool this summer.

Souness pointed to comments the club captain made about his future back in January in which he hinted that his next steps might lie away from Anfield with Jurgen Klopp leaving this summer, although he later rowed back on that suggestion.

Van Dijk has already spoken about countryman Slot’s impending arrival, describing him as 'one of the best Dutch coaches' around currently.

The 32-year-old has just 12 months remaining on his contract and faces a crossroads this summer.

Souness fears that the Netherlands international is leaning towards an exit, mooting that he is “obviously unhappy” at Liverpool and could look for one last big career move.

Speaking to the Three Up Front podcast, the former Reds manager said: “The fact that Virgil van Dijk’s contract end is coming up worries me, he’s 33 in July, and if his agent were to call up the sporting director at Real Madrid, they’d take him.

“I just look at him now and the noise he’s been making, which he hasn’t done throughout his career, and I think he’s obviously unhappy.”

He added: “He’ll [Van Dijk] have asked questions about the new manager already and will be the one that Arne Slot has to win over.

Slot must get Van Dijk onside – he’s the captain – but Van Dijk might not fancy him.

“He might’ve heard something on the grapevine and may think that this guy won’t take the team where they want to be, the clock is ticking on his career, maybe he needs to go someplace else to win more silverware.

He has won two of the big ones with Liverpool, but he’s not a serial winner.”

A few days after Klopp made his exit decision public, Van Dijk told media he was 'curious' about which direction the club would navigate towards under a new manager, adding that 'when that will be announced we will see our situation'.

Two days later, he clarified his comments, claiming they had been presented wrongly.

He said: "To be 100 per cent clear, I am fully committed to the club.
