With just over a month left of the season, Liverpool are still deliberating over who will lead them next term.

The Reds have known for the past three months now that they’ll be without Jurgen Klopp for 2024/25.

The latest to do so is former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic, who has given a strong suggestion to Liverpool.

As things stand, despite Ornstein’s suggestion that an unexpected hire may occur, Ruben Amorim looks the favourite to inherit Liverpool’s first-team squad.

Although talk of a contract being offered to him last week was crushed, the Sporting manager is reportedly nailed on to get an interview at least.

And according to Matic, there’s very good reason for that.

The Serbian played alongside Amorim having joined Benfica in 2011 and speaking to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, only had good things to say about the 39-year-old.

“Ruben Amorim is an excellent person, he was one of those who helped me the most when I arrived at Benfica because he speaks English very well, I hope he hasn’t forgotten how to speak now [laughs],” says Matic.

“I see Ruben Amorim at a great club, I don’t know if it will be Liverpool, but if it happens I’m sure he’s a great replacement for Klopp because Ruben understands football and has the personality and character to be a great coach, he already is one today.

“I’d like to see him in the Premier League, let’s see what happens from now on.”

It feels like we may have to wait until the end of the season before we get any official indication as to who will be following Klopp.

Amorim may have become the press’ favourite over the past three weeks, but, publicly, the Sporting boss has given any talk about his future the cold shoulder.

That’s understandable, really.

Amorim and his team are closing in on a second league title in four years and have a cup final against Porto coming up.
