Liverpool took to Wembley Stadium on Sunday as they faced Crystal Palace in the Community Shield.

The Reds have had a good pre-season, and were back to domestic action for the first time this campaign against FA Cup winners Palace.

There was plenty of intrigue surrounding who would play in the curtain-raiser, with Arne Slot handed a first opportunity to show off his strongest XI for Liverpool.

One of the big questions was over who would begin the game at left-back for the Reds.

With Milos Kerkez signed and Andy Robertson still very much in the frame, Slot had a decision to make, one which ultimately went in Kerkez’s favour.

But with the first and second choice left-back in the matchday squad, there was no room for Kostas Tsimikas.

And after the reason for Tsimikas’ absence was confirmed to be transfer related, an update arrived from Greece just before kick-off.

Prior to the summer window, it had felt especially likely that Tsimikas would no longer be a Liverpool player when September came around.

Kerkez’s arrival meant there were three left-backs in the Liverpool squad.

That is simply too many.

However, as time has gone on, and Tsimikas has been used at centre-back, it has seemed possible that he might stay.

But it emerged before the Community Shield kicked off that Tsimikas had been left out as a move to Nottingham Forest is in the works.

Just before kick-off another update came out from Greek journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos who confirmed that Forest have been in touch over a permanent transfer.

“Nottingham Forest are highly interested in Kostas Tsimikas.

Forest contacted Liverpool for a permanent transfer,” Chorianopoulos reported on X.

As well as Tsimikas, there was a notable absence in the Liverpool team in the shape of Ryan Gravenberch.

With Gravenberch suspended for Liverpool’s first game of the season against Bournemouth on Friday, Slot will have to make do without the Dutchman at Anfield.

However, Gravenberch was available for Sunday’s game, with some initial worry over why he was not in the side.

But as revealed by Slot before kick-off, the 23-year-old missed the game after his partner gave birth on Saturday.

“Ryan Gravenberch became a dad last night,” Slot said.
