Oldham Athletic are set to appoint ex-Liverpool winger Harry Kewell as their manager after sacking Dino Maamria on Friday night, according to widespread reports.

The League Two outfit were 19th in the table when coronavirus brought a halt to the 2019/20 campaign.

The Boundary Park job would be 41-year-old Kewell's third role in charge of an EFL side, following short-term stints in charge of Crawley Town and Notts County in 2017 and 2018.

Kewell led Crawley to a 14th-placed finish in League Two in the 2017-18 season.

He then moved to Notts County during the following summer.

But the 58-times capped Australian lasted only 14 games at Meadow Lane and was sacked in November 2018. County went on to be relegated in May 2019.

Kewell has also held a coaching role at Watford, where he was manager of their under-21s from 2015 to 2017.

The Oldham job was held by former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes around 18 months ago, but he lasted just 31 days.

Scholes resigned, stating: "It unfortunately became clear that I would not be able to operate as I intended and was led to believe prior to taking on the role."
