Matheus Cunha has expressed “gratitude” for Manchester United fans’ patience after his slow and injury-afflicted start to the season.

Ruben Amorim‘s root-and-stem rebuild at Old Trafford began with the signing of Cunha from Wolves for £62.5million, triggering the Brazilian’s release clause to make him their first signing of the summer.

Cunha‘s arrival marked the start of a strategy to strengthen Amorim’s frontline above other areas of the team, after Man United scored 44 Premier League goals on their way to a 15th-placed finish last term.

Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko‘s signings have joined Cunha to give Man United a new-look attack costing close to £200m, but Amorim is yet to play the trio together and his chance to do so could now be delayed.

Cunha and Mbeumo have been ever-presents in the Premier League so far this season but Amorim has elected to start Mason Mount alongside the pair in United’s front three, with Sesko on the periphery.

Amorim was slammed for leaving Sesko on the bench until the second half of their 3-2 win over Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday, after Cunha was withdrawn in the 31st minute following a hamstring injury.

Joshua Zirkzee came on to replace the Brazilian up front as Amorim’s side rescued a victory with Bruno Fernandes‘ injury-time penalty, and Cunha posted on Instagram to provide an update for worried fans.

Football Insider Verdict

Cunha’s injury does mean that he’ll remain at Carrington during the international break rather than jetting off on duty for Brazil, but Mbeumo and Sesko will be away with Cameroon and Slovenia respectively.

That leaves Amorim with little time to develop the trio’s chemistry and combinations before returning to Premier League action with the Manchester Derby, and it remains to be seen if Cunha will be fit by then.

Amorim faces the sack if Man United lose to Man City, and with none of his three brand-new attackers potentially in full training in the period before that match, the signs aren’t good for the Portuguese.
