With his foot buried under a thick cast, a smiling Harvey Elliott threw a thumbs-up after the Liverpool star's successful surgery to set him on the 'road to recovery.

The distress was written across the surrounding players' faces and, though Elliott later insisted the injury 'wasn't his fault whatsoever,' Struik was sent off while the Reds winger departed on a stretcher.

Elliott was building momentum and settling into regular Premier League football this season after Jurgen Klopp claimed he'd made 'big steps' in pre-season.

The Elland Road match was his third start in a row, emerging as one of the Reds' brightest young stars alongside midfielder Curtis Jones.

His injury will delay his progress but Klopp will hope he makes a speedy recovery, with the Reds refusing to put a time scale on his return - though expecting him back this season.

'Harvey sustained a fracture dislocation of his left ankle during the game,' Dr Jim Moxon explained, having been one of the physios who rushed to the wailing Elliot as he lay stricken on the pitch.

'We were able to reduce the dislocation immediately on the pitch and Harvey had surgery today to repair the fracture and ligaments damaged in the incident.
