Lee Carsley has challenged Harvey Elliott to win a promotion to the England senior squad ahead of next summer’s European Championships in Germany.
The Liverpool midfielder was a squad player for England Under-21s as they won their own corresponding Euros this summer, and has since cemented his place as first-choice in Carsley’s midfield.

“If you’re playing week in, week out in the Premier League - We keep getting all the surveys back saying there aren’t enough English-born players in the Premier League – so if you’re playing then you’re in line for selection.”
Elliott has made 16 appearances for Liverpool so far this season, but only returned one assist.
Reflecting on his use of the Reds’ midfielder, Carsley admitted Elliott is granted a more advanced role for England Under-21s and benefitting from starting regularly - something that is not guaranteed at Anfield.
“We have to make sure that when he is on camp, we can’t guarantee him minutes at Liverpool but I can guarantee him minutes here and be an important part of what we do.
