It has been a difficult and uncertain summer for Liverpool.

Diogo Jota’s death presented the club with questions they never dreamed of having to answer, as squad-planning took a different route.

Due to multiple additions, many players in the squad face a confusing future, as they now feel unsure about whether it is right to fight for a place in the team, or head elsewhere as the future of the team evolves without them.

Harvey Elliott is one of the players that faces a significant dilemma.

It is clearly bothering him too, as he recently had this to say:

“I love everything about the club, but at the same time I kind of need to be selfish and see what’s best for me.”

“I want to keep being successful as a player.

It is something I still need to review.

I need to have a talk with everyone and review the situation.”

“We have many new players who have come in so whether it blocks the path for me, I’m not sure.”

Elliott is a player who is arguably too good to spend the majority of yet another season on the bench, and a move away could best suit him for the development of his career.

The problems exist – Liverpool have no desire to sell the Englishman, and with his contract running until 2027 and the club’s valuation of him sitting at £50m, there are factors that present a stumbling block to any club looking to sign him.

He has been a peripheral player for his Reds career so far, but he truly showed what he was capable of at England’s U21 European Championships this summer, and he scored crucial goals in every round of the tournament to help his country on their way to European glory.

Sebastian Stafford-Bloor for The Athletic has suggested that the Bundesliga may be the best place for Elliott to play his football, as players of his profile flourish in a league like that.

“Elliott’s data profile describes him, potentially, as a standout playmaker in Germany.”

“He lacks an extra gear of speed, perhaps, but his progressive passing and the overall quality of his distribution make him an obvious fit for a league full of transitions and rapid attacking players.”

The league is a brilliant place for high potential players like Elliott, where he won’t be stuck behind high-wage earners and will be assured of a route upwards.

RB Leipzig have held interest in Elliott this summer but any sort of move was far from materialising.

The Englishman may need to consider the Bundesliga, if Arne Slot makes it clear that his playing time will once again be limited next season.
