England’s U21 squad added another title to their trophy cabinet after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Germany in the European Championship final, held in Slovakia.
The win, which came after extra time, saw the Young Lions hold their nerve under pressure to secure back-to-back championships.
The team’s impressive run was highlighted by moments of individual brilliance and collective resilience, but it was one player who stood out as a key figure in their success.
For Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott, this victory was especially meaningful.
After being part of the team that triumphed in 2023, Elliott spoke about what it felt like to win again.
With the weight of expectations on their shoulders, the Young Lions had a target on their back, but Elliott’s leadership and skill on the field were vital in guiding his side to victory.
Harvey Elliott reflected on the win, sharing his emotions after the match.
He told Channel 4, “It’s another incredible moment.”
“This one meant a lot more, especially coming off the back of winning it last time.”
“There were big expectations, big pressure but the way the lads handled it from start to finish of this tournament, I think no-one deserves it more than us.”
Elliott, who was ever-present throughout the tournament, scored five goals in six appearances and was named Player of the Tournament.
He was lauded by UEFA’s Technical Observer Group as his team’s “most effective player from the first game onwards.”
Looking ahead, Elliott now has his sights set on earning a call-up to the senior England squad.
He acknowledged the competition for places in Gareth Southgate’s team but is determined to keep working hard.
“It’s never going to be easy because of the talent that’s in the team – world-class players from top to bottom.”
“It’s just about me working hard, trying to show it at club level and hopefully getting the opportunity,” he added.
Elliott’s performance in the final, played in front of senior team coach Thomas Tuchel, was his chance to show what he could do on the big stage.
“We’re thankful for him coming out here to support us and hopefully we put on a show for him,” Elliott said, looking towards his potential future with the senior side.
