Harvey Elliott was left in ‘massive pain’ after dislocating his ankle in Liverpool’s Premier League win over Leeds and will now start the long road to recovery – vowing he’ll ‘be back faster, fitter and stronger’.

Liverpool have said Elliott ‘is expected to return to action later this season’.

Liverpool club doctor Dr Jim Moxon said: “Harvey sustained a fracture dislocation of his left ankle during the game.

“To all of the Liverpool fans, your support means the world to me.

“I’m of course absolutely devastated with what happened yesterday at Leeds, but have been totally overwhelmed by the love and support shown to me by the entire football world following the injury,” Elliott wrote on Instagram.

Leeds defender Pascal Struijk, who was shown a straight red card for the offence, seemed bemused by the incident but Jurgen Klopp and Mohamed Salah led the protests as the 18-year-old was stretchered from the Elland Road pitch.

Such was the gruesome nature of the injury, TV coverage did not show a single replay of the incident as Elliott lay on the ground in huge discomfort.
