Harvey Elliott made his first pre-season appearance in Liverpool’s 4-2 defeat to AC Milan.
Despite the result, the 22-year-old looked sharp and confident.
Having earned an extended break after helping England win the U21 Euros, Elliott admitted there was some uncertainty over how ready he’d feel.
But once the match kicked off at Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Stadium, any doubt disappeared.
“I didn’t really know how I’d feel,” Elliott told Liverpool FC.
“But at half-time, I felt like I could go on and still go on and try to influence the game.”
The midfielder slotted into a No.10 role and immediately found chemistry with new signing Florian Wirtz.
“We had a fair few opportunities and we were able to cause problems,” Elliott added.
Despite the four goals conceded, Elliott emphasized the importance of pre-season for learning and experimentation.
The teenager, who featured prominently in the build-up to Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning goal, made a serious impression with his confidence and composure.
“He’s fearless,” Elliott said.
“He just looked like a kid in a park, although he is a kid!”
Elliott praised the young winger’s attitude and potential, noting that the senior players are doing their best to guide him.
“If he keeps performing the way he is, working hard as he is, the kid’s got an amazing future.”
The Reds will now head to Japan, where Elliott hopes to sharpen his tools further and continue building rhythm ahead of the new campaign.
