Harvey Elliott admits struggling with the "ridiculous" conditions as the Liverpool midfielder suffered frustration with England under-21s.

The Young Lions were held to a goalless draw by Slovenia in their latest match at the UEFA European Under-21 Championships in Slovakia on Sunday.

In baking heat approaching 30 degrees Celsius, England dominated the game with Elliott, who was named man of the match, coming close on several occasions to opening the scoring including hitting the woodwork.

The result means Lee Carsley's side need a point against leaders Germany in their final group game on Wednesday to assure progress to the knockout stages.

And of the stalemate with Slovenia, Elliott said: "It was ridiculous.

I’d rather it be really hot today than pouring down with rain.

"It’s another test, another obstacle in the way for us.

If we have to play in that heat again, I feel we have adapted to it very well.”

Elliott was joined in the starting line-up by Liverpool team-mate Jarell Quansah while Tyler Morton emerged from the bench for the final 20 minutes.

England, who began their defence of the trophy with a 3-1 win over Czechia on Thursday, had 65% possession and managed 20 shots but were unable to overly test Slovenia goalkeeper Martin Turk.

“I thought it was frustrating,” said Carsley.

“It wasn't for the want of effort; we just lacked a little bit of quality at times.

"We had some really good chances.

I felt if we would have taken one of them, then we'd have won the game comfortably.

“We have to give Slovenia credit as well.
