Harvey Elliott’s 2024/25 season has been marked by frustration, with the 21-year-old midfielder experiencing a dramatic drop in playing time under Arne Slot after being a trusted figure during Jurgen Klopp’s final campaign.
In 2023/24, Elliott was a regular presence, featuring in 53 matches and contributing 4 goals and 11 assists.
This term, however, he has started just four matches in all competitions, logging only 583 minutes – a reduction of nearly 80% in starts compared to the previous year.
Elliott’s difficulties began early in the season when he suffered a fractured foot while on international duty with England’s Under-21s in September 2024, forcing him out of action for six weeks.
This injury came at an unfortunate moment, sidelining him during the busy opening months of the season and denying him the chance to make a strong impression on the new manager.
The player himself has hinted that he needs to leave Anfield for the good of his career.
Speaking to reporters at the end of the season, the 21-year-old said:
“It’s just a situation that me, and the team on my behalf, have to have a conversation about,” Elliott explained.
“I’m going to be 23 next season, and I don’t really want to be wasting years of my career, because it’s a short career.
“I just want to improve and be the best player I can be?
If that’s to go somewhere else, then it’s a decision I’m going to have to make.
Now the Athletic has reported that Liverpool would want a minimum of £40m to allow Elliott to depart:
“When they sold a 21-year-old Fabio Carvalho to Brentford last summer, it was in a deal that could be worth £27.5million ($37m) to Liverpool, with add-ons, and Elliott has a far more substantial body of work in the Premier League than his fellow Fulham academy graduate had then,” journalist Andy Jones notes.
“For Elliott, given the prices being quoted for other players in similar positions this summer, the club are seeking a fee of more than £40m.”
Reports have linked Elliott to Aston Villa, with Unai Emery’s side believed to be the most advanced for him.
