Harvey Elliott delivered a masterclass performance for England Under-21s against the Netherlands in Wednesday evening’s European Championship semi-final, scoring twice to secure a 2-1 victory and book the Young Lions’ place in Saturday’s final against Germany.
The 22-year-old was in scintillating form at the Stadion Tehelne pole in Bratislava.
He opening the scoring just after the hour mark with a powerful right-footed finish into the roof of the net after collecting Elliot Anderson’s pass.
Despite Noah Ohio’s equalizer for the Netherlands, Elliott demonstrated his quality once again with an 86th-minute winner, driving through the Dutch defense before firing a clinical left-footed effort into the bottom corner to secure England’s passage to the final.
Elliott’s two goals took his tally to four for the tournament.
However, speaking to the media post-match, the Liverpool midfielder revealed a mishap during his celebration of the opening goal.
Attempting a knee slide on the dry Bratislava pitch, the midfielder became stuck in the surface and tumbled forward, leaving a visible divot in the ground behind him.
Speaking to Channel 4 after the match, Elliott was candid about the potential damage he did to his knee:
“I don’t know what I’ve done to my knee, but it’s bloody hurting.
So hopefully it’s nothing too silly?
It’s a silly decision from me, to be honest, but it’s just one of them, live in the moment”
The Liverpool star continued:
“You do these things, but I forgot the pitch was ridiculously dry and it is the price I have got to pay”.
Despite the discomfort, Elliott played on through the pain to complete the full 90 minutes, suggesting he will be fit for the final on Saturday.
His performances for the Young Lions these past few weeks will only serve to enhance his transfer prospects this summer.
Elliott is expected to move on, with the likes of Brighton and Aston Villa interested in the 22-year-old.
Liverpool have reportedly set an asking price between £40-50 million for Elliott.
The arrival of Florian Wirtz in a club-record £116 million deal has further pushed Elliott down the pecking order at Anfield, making a summer departure increasingly likely
