Early goals from Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah had given the Reds a 2-0 lead against Atletico, only for Arne Slot’s side to be pegged back by a Marcos Llorente brace.
However, Van Dijk then clinched victory by heading home a Dominik Szoboszlai corner as Liverpool came out on top thanks to a late winner for the fifth game in a row.
Meanwhile, Atletico manager Diego Simeone was sent off after clashing with members of the crowd following the Reds' captain's winner.
Elliott had previously admitted his love of Liverpool "is going to be there forever" despite his exit when speaking after making his debut for Villa.
"I mean for me, I loved every minute of it; every second, every day,” he told reporters.
“I wouldn’t change it to be honest, I learned so much from being there and experienced many things.
"The love I have for Liverpool is still going to be there forever, that’s not going to change, I’m still going to be watching and looking out for them from afar.
