Harvey Elliott watched on from the stands as Liverpool thumped local neighbours Tranmere Rovers 6-0 in their first game since winning the Champions League last month.

The 16-year-old is edging closer to a move to Liverpool from Fulham with a compensation package set to be decided by a tribunal after the two clubs failed to agree a transfer fee.

Elliott has agreed youth terms at Liverpool after turning down a contract at Fulham and is expected to be integrated into Jurgen Klopp’s first-team squad upon his arrival at Anfield.

The England U18 international will no doubt have been impressed by what he saw at Prenton Park as two experimental Liverpool sides tore apart their League Two opponents.

Nathaniel Clyne, back from his loan spell at Bournemouth, fired Liverpool into the lead, before Rhian Brewster scored two predatory finishes to put Liverpool 3-0 up at the interval.

Klopp took the opportunity to rotate his entire team for the second half and Divock Origi capped his new contract with a goal sandwiched between strikes from Curtis Jones and Bobby Duncan.

Liverpool have been quiet so far during the transfer window with 17-year-old Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg the only addition to Klopp’s squad after he joined for £4.4m from PEC Zwolle.

Elliott is expected to be the next player through the door and Liverpool have high hopes for the talented playmaker after beating the likes of Real Madrid and PSG to his signature.
