He hasn't got': Jermaine Pennant suggests why Harvey Elliott is really not getting games for Liverpool

Liverpool are going to have to make some sales this summer and it could at the expense of some serious talent.

The Reds have gone big this summer and have laid down a real marker to the rest of the division after spending close to £200m.

Their spending has likely not stopped there yet either and a few more big additions could soon occur, although they will turn their attentions to outgoings first.

Harvey Elliott is heavily linked with a move away and after his impressive display at the Under 21 European Championships, the demand for his signature has only increased.

However, so has his market price and Liverpool will be more than willing to sell if the right offer comes in for him, especially as Arne Slot does not appear to be the biggest fan of his after offering him just two Premier League starts all season.

The reason for this is largely unknown as he has impressed when given the chance, although former Red Jermaine Pennant has suggested why he thinks Elliott does not get many minutes.

Versatility is almost always a trait all managers love as it gives them many options for success, with Liverpool’s attack having this in abundance.

However, Elliott’s ability to play anywhere may actually be harming his chances at Anfield due to Slot not knowing his best position, or at least that is what Pennant told talkSPORT he believes is the problem.

“With Harvey [Elliott], he hasn’t got a prominent position.

Like Mo Salah, you know he plays on the right,” Pennant said.

“Whereas Harvey Elliott can play on the left, play on the right, he can play in the number eight spot a little bit deeper, he can play high, so he’s too versatile.

“He’s at an age now where he needs to be playing regular football, he’s earned that right in any other team.

He’s 22 now, he’s been playing first-team football since he was 16, he’s had a massive taste of it but now he’s getting into his crunchiest years, important years, and it will be a waste to sit on the bench at Liverpool.”

Elliott’s preferred position is the number 10 role, but he is often used as a number eight or even out on the right as a replacement for Mohamed Salah.

However, with his opportunities limited out wide due to the Egyptian’s consistency, he will find minutes even harder to come by due to Florian Wirtz’s arrival, suggesting a departure is the best for his career.

When challenging for almost every trophy, squad depth can be key and all the big teams need it if they are to dominate the division.

At the moment, Liverpool’s squad depth is adequate but they still need to add to it slightly, so losing a player like Elliott would be a huge loss, especially because of what he brings from off the bench.

“You’ve seen him pop up with big goals, the PSG 1-0 where they were absolutely battered, and sometimes he comes on and changes the game,” Pennant said on talkSPORT.

“He gives it a bit more life with his IQ, through balls, seeing passes, so it will be a loss because that’s what teams and managers love, when they can go to their bench and that player they are bringing on can change the game, and it seems like every time he brought Harvey on, he made a difference in the game.”

This is certainly a decision that Slot cannot take lightly and needs to think hard about, as selling Elliott could turn out to be their most costly mistake for quite some time.
