However, they could have been even better if they had managed to get the transfer of one player over the line.

Indeed, they only pulled out due to not being able to source a replacement, but the fact that they allowed Guehi to undergo his Liverpool medical and then they still pulled out, shows how unprepared they were for his departure.

And now, while speaking to Sky Sports, Slot has shared an insight into how Guehi is likely feeling now that he’s still a Crystal Palace player.

“For us, it was of course a disappointment [not signing Guehi],” he said.

“But for the player, I assume as well, because he was expecting to come to us.

“I tried to put myself in the players’ shoes, but that can happen with a player from us as well, that a player wanted to leave, but in the end couldn’t because we couldn’t get the player we wanted.

“That happens in football many times.”

It goes without saying that Guehi is currently one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs.

But if Konate doesn’t end up extending his stay and instead chooses to leave upon the expiry of his contract, there’s no reason why Liverpool couldn’t make another move for him in January, or even wait until next summer to sign him for free.

At the moment, there’s no knowing what’s going to happen, but if Guehi still wants to join Liverpool, there’s no reason why the Anfield outfit shouldn’t go after him again in future windows.
