Jordan Henderson’s tearful embrace with dad Brian was one of the stories of Liverpool's Champions League triumph in 2019.

He overcame throat cancer after being diagnosed with the disease in 2013 to see his son lift the iconic trophy in Madrid on an emotional night.

Cameras caught the emotional moment that the Liverpool captain embraced his dad on the side of the pitch with tears streaming down his face after the biggest night of his career.

Henderson has now recalled a similarly emotional moment which took place behind closed doors and over the phone after wrapping up the Premier League title.

The Liverpool players celebrated together in a hotel as their first league title in 30 years was confirmed by Manchester City ’s defeat to Chelsea.

Amongst the chaos, Henderson took time out to call his family and share another tearful moment of celebration.

Henderson told the Liverpool Echo : “I spoke to my loved ones straight after Man City had lost to Chelsea to ensure we had won the title.

“I spoke to my Dad, I think he had had a few wines, to be honest! He was quite emotional.

“Not much was being said, but he was over the moon we’d finally won the Premier League and was so happy for all of us.

"There have been ups and downs over the last few years and throughout my career. There are always going to be tough times in your career and your life.

“It’s about how you deal and react to those setbacks. You can use them as motivation to push yourself forward and want to improve.

You need those setbacks in your career to become stronger as a player and a person also.”

After the Champions League triumph last year, an emotional Brian Henderson told Optus Sport: "When he was 10 I took him to see a Champions League final at Manchester United between the two Milans and he said to us, when they came out to the Champions League music, he said, 'dad I'm going to play there one day’.

"He's done it not once, but twice. And he's won one. I'm absolutely delighted for him.

"I think if he hadn't picked that trophy up today he would have had a bad, bad summer. But now he'll have a fantastic summer with the children.

"It's just very emotional, the tears come, you start shaking, you grab your wife, you grab your daughter-in-law, you grab anybody that's around you. I'm just so, so happy."
