However, for Liverpool to retain the title and do better in the Champions League this term, a massive clear-out was needed, and that’s exactly what happened.

Several players, such as Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, were moved on in the summer, with Harvey Elliott also exiting on deadline day.

And, according to Owen Hargreaves, this may have been a mistake on Liverpool’s behalf as he reckons that the young Englishman could end up becoming as good as Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard.
Elliott was originally brought to Liverpool by Klopp when he was just 16 years old.
“I think Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio were brilliant for this Aston Villa team,” he said.
“ [However] I think Harvey Elliott can eventually go on to be a player as good as Martin Odegaard.
“I think technically he’s fantastic, he hasn’t had the opportunities at Liverpool obviously because they had so many players but I think centrally he’s a fabulous player.”
At the moment, it’s clear that Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai would have been chosen over Elliott if he’d have stayed at Liverpool.
This will then allow the Reds to buy him back in the future if he ends up fulfilling his potential and performing better than his former Liverpool teammates.
Of course, last season could have been the end of Elliott’s Liverpool journey, but never say never, that is, especially if he does end up becoming as good as Odegaard.
