Tottenham instructed TNT Sports to reveal the reason why their chairman Daniel Levy was not in attendance for his side’s Super Cup clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

Spurs‘ 1-0 Europa League triumph against Man United in May allowed them to compete in the Super Cup on Wednesday (13 August) against PSG in Udine.

The Parisians thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final, and so were clear favourites for the clash which took place just a few short days before the start of each side’s domestic league campaign.

Despite that goals from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero looked to have stunned the European champions before late, late comeback strikes from Lee Kang-in and Goncalo Ramos took the game to penalties where Van de Ven and Mathys Tel missed to see the trophy slip from their grasp.

Levy has been a divisive figure in North London for a long time since he took over as Spurs’ chairman from Lord Alan Sugar in 2001, with a 24-year reign that makes him the longest-serving in his post in the English top-flight.

Despite their recent success, Levy is believed to be looking to sell Tottenham soon, and he was absent as they aimed to win more silverware in new boss Thomas Frank’s first competitive game in charge on Wednesday.

TNT Sports covered the Super Cup for British viewers, and lead commentator Darren Fletcher, who was briefed on Levy’s absence, revealed why he was not at the game in the 84th minute live on air as Tottenham seemed to be preparing to hand out more medals, saying: “All jokes aside, his daughter is starting university, that’s why he’s not here.

“Spurs did say, ‘Look you might want to mention it, because if we do win it and give out the medals and Daniel’s not there, people would wonder why’.

So there is no issue, there are mitigating circumstances as to why the Tottenham chairman wouldn’t be here tonight.”

Tottenham’s Football London reporter, Alasdair Gold, also confirmed as much in a post on X prior to kick-off, and went on to reveal that Spurs CEO Vinai Venkatesham was the club’s representative sat with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin and PSG owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi in Levy’s place.

Spurs ended up losing their Super Cup clash to PSG on penalties, but the game could have looked very different had club legend Son been able to have his say in Udine.

Football finance expert Dan Plumley recently revealed to Football Insider that Tottenham can spend hundreds of millions and still be PSR compliant, yet they have once again hardly spent much at all this summer so far, with Mohammed Kudus their only big-money capture.

Son left Tottenham earlier this month, citing the feeling that he had “achieved everything” he could in North London, even though his ten-year stay yielded just the one trophy win right at the end.

It is safe to say that, had Levy invested more in the squad over the years and given Son some more quality to shine alongside with Harry Kane, then he may well have stayed for longer and been able to win more silverware at the club under the 63-year-old’s ownership.
