Eddie Howe could kick off the new season without a single proven centre-forward as Newcastle United prepare to face Aston Villa in their opening match.

Liverpool’s statement bid for Alexander Isak was swiftly rejected by the Magpies, but with the entire saga continuing until the end of the window, it is becoming more likely that the star leaves this summer.

Now appearing likely to lose the race for Benjamin Sesko to Man United, the club are searching for new targets, and that figure could come in the form of Nicolas Jackson for Newcastle.

According to The Telegraph (6 August), Jackson has emerged as a serious option for Howe’s side after missing out on a multitude of other stars, including Sesko, Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, and Hugo Ekitike.

The striker’s transition to St James’ Park will not be as smooth as many would hope, however, which has already become clear before these links have even materialised into concrete contact between the clubs.

Mick Brown told Football Insider that Man United are unlikely to take their interest in Jackson any further due to the £80million price tag, but Newcastle cannot be as picky with their selections.

Howe faces a very real risk of heading into the 2025/26 Premier League season without Isak through the middle, and with Callum Wilson joining West Ham, William Osula is the only natural striker left.

Signing the forward from Chelsea, though, will not solve Howe’s problems immediately, and the irony surrounding exactly why will not be lost on those at St James’ Park.

The 24-year-old’s disciplinary record has been there for the entire Premier League to see, even picking up a two-match suspension during the Club World Cup due to his sending-off against Flamengo.

Newcastle have faced his wrath before, having gone up against the Senegal international last season, and seen referee John Brooks send Jackson off for an elbow on defender Sven Botman.

This saw him miss the final two games of the season against Man United and Nottingham Forest, but having been handed a three-match ban, he still has a one-game suspension to serve.

Much like Jaka Bijol being suspended at Leeds United for their opening game, Jackson would be unavailable for selection due to his red card against the club that he could sign for this summer.

If this move is to materialise, after all the missed transfers for the Magpies this summer, supporters can only sit back and laugh at their own misfortune as their club heads into a new Premier League campaign.
