Darwin Núñez has scored 18 times and assisted another 13 for Liverpool so far this season so his numbers are clearly not all bad.

"You want him to do well because he gives everything, he causes trouble, he gets the odd goal," he said on live Sky Sports.

"But after two years, when Liverpool are going for the title or in big games, you need your man to score at Old Trafford or at Goodison Park.



After nearly two seasons, though, he has not yet managed to take that next step.

According to The Times, Liverpool's recruitment team felt that then-RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku was a good fit, but Jürgen Klopp pushed for Núñez.

Nkunku ended up staying in the Bundesliga for another season before he moved to Chelsea for a fee of $64m (£51m/€60m)

The Frenchman scored 70 goals and assisted another 56 for Leipzig in 172 appearances and would have also come with the benefit of being adaptable and capable of playing anyway in a forward area, be it out wide, as a number 10 or a number nine.

To date for Chelsea, however, having been injured for almost the whole season, Nkunku has only managed to play a total of 394 minutes on the pitch in a competitive environment

His time in England so far has been ravaged by a variety of issues and the 26-year-old has made almost no impact for his new side.
