Liverpool fans finally got a look at their new £125million striker, Alexander Isak, after his debut at Anfield in the Champions League.

While there were worries that Arne Slot would regret starting Isak against Atletico Madrid, the Swede showcased why the Reds were so excited to sign him.

Joe Cole warned Liverpool against rushing Isak into action and Liverpool have heeded his words but the striker does need match rhythm to catch up to his teammates.

After Danny Murphy declared Erling Haaland the best striker in the world, the 25-year-old will be raring to make his next appearance for the Reds.

Isak’s Liverpool debut at Anfield under the Champions League lights may have only lasted 58 minutes, but it offered a great insight into what fans and rivals alike can expect from the Swede on Merseyside.

He took 25 touches with four in the box and showcased his ability to shoot with minimal backlift in a penalty area packed full of Atletico Madrid defenders.

From two shots, the forward had one on target and one off.

His dribbling was similarly hit and miss, completing just one of his three attempts to beat his man.

In terms of passing, 81% accuracy is to be expected from a striker, but Isak will be happy with one key pass for his debut.

Isak might not have scored for Liverpool on his debut, but Liverpool didn’t sign him to play for their opening Champions League fixture alone.

The Swedish striker is the club’s most expensive player ever, but is also unfit and lacking match rhythm.

Once Isak is up to speed, it won’t be long before he is putting the ball in the back of the net and then Liverpool will be seeing more of the player who has 44 Premier League goals in the last two seasons.

When he does click with his teammates, this Liverpool attack is going to be quite something.

The idea of a front three featuring Isak, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo or Hugo Ekitike is truly thrilling.
