Andre Onana has given his stance on how he feels about his Man United goalkeeper role moving forward amid the expected arrival of Senne Lammens.

One of the main areas of concern for Man United is in the goalkeeping department with both Onana and Altay Bayindir failing to impress when called upon during their careers at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim has been so disappointed by the Cameroonian that sources told Football Insider on 29 August that Onana had been offered by Man United to West Ham.

The former Ajax shot stopper is unwanted by his club with the Red Devils pushing forward to bring Lammens to Man United from Royal Antwerp on a reported five-year deal, casting further doubt over his future.

According to Daily Mail reporter Chris Wheeler on X (1 September), the deal to bring in the Belgian should see the Cameroon international remain at Old Trafford.

However, had Amorim pushed forward for Aston Villa number one Emi Martinez, things could have been different for the ex-Inter keeper.

Wheeler said on Onana’s situation: “No plans for Onana or Bayindir to leave Utd once Lammens signs – though still time for things to change with 6hr+ of the window to go.

“Understand Onana has been expecting to stay, but not sure that would have been the case if Utd [United] had opted for Martinez over Lammens.”

Football Insider verdict

Whilst there is a sense of optimism in Manchester for the impending arrival of the 23-year-old, caution must be warranted given the keeper’s young age.

Lammens has only played in the Belgian top-flight for Club Brugge and Royal Antwerp, highlighting his lack of exposure to the “top five” European leagues.

Moreover, the 2024-25 season was the first campaign where he became a regular for his club, keeping nine clean sheets in 42 matches.

Switching to the Premier League is no easy transition, especially joining United which has become a recent graveyard for talented youth prodigies who have ultimately flopped.

Towering at six-foot-four, the ambipedal shot stopper could easily fall short under the pressure at Old Trafford, becoming yet another failed young prospect to be tainted by the stress of United.

Patience will be needed to see if the Belgian has what it takes to finally break the keeper curse as Amorim needs every bit of defensive solidity right now to save his dwindling career.
