When Liverpool clinched their Premier League title at Anfield, it wasn’t just the fans who were on fire.

The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, and it seemed like the entire place was vibrating with excitement.

For anyone who was there, or even watching from home, the passion was clear – the crowd’s energy was unstoppable.

It wasn’t just the usual roar of approval after a goal; it was something more intense.

But what if you were told that the energy of the crowd actually caused an actual seismic event?

As unbelievable as it sounds, Liverpool’s historic title win produced seismic activity that was measurable on the Richter scale.

Yes, you read that right – ground-shaking excitement.

To capture this, the University of Liverpool installed a seismometer in Anfield’s Main Stand during the match.

The data showed that each of Liverpool’s six goals during their 5-1 victory over Tottenham sent shockwaves through the stadium.

The biggest tremor was recorded after Alexis Mac Allister’s stunning goal in the 24th minute, which produced a peak magnitude of 1.74 on the Richter scale.

It wasn’t just Mac Allister’s strike; Mohamed Salah’s goal in front of the Kop also triggered a significant shake, with a magnitude of 1.60.

Other goals, including Cody Gakpo’s and Destiny Udogie’s own goal, produced smaller but still notable tremors.

Ben Edwards, professor of engineering seismology at the University of Liverpool, explained, “This experiment gave us a unique opportunity to use seismology to capture a scientific record of the magnitude of Liverpool’s historic title-clinching win.”

“Using state-of-the-art, seismic-monitoring equipment – normally deployed in earthquake zones like Chile and Italy – we recorded the incredible energy released both at the surface and below.”

Arne Slot, Liverpool’s head coach, expressed his amazement at the atmosphere, saying, “During the game, after the game, it’s been incredible how the support of the fans were and how our players played.”

Liverpool’s left-back Andy Robertson shared a similar sentiment, “How we came into the ground, the fans during the game, the fans after the game – nothing quite compares to that.”

Tottenham’s boss, Ange Postecoglou, acknowledged the role the fans played, commenting, “I thought just in general we had decent territory but once they got in front with the atmosphere inside the stadium, fair to say it was going to be difficult for us to claw them back and that’s how it proved.”

It’s clear that the roar of Anfield wasn’t just a figure of speech – it was literally shaking the ground beneath it.
