Former Feyenoord star Cole Bassett has shared his insights into playing under Arne Slot during his time at the club.

He also shed light on the Dutchman’s admiration for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.

Slot, who assumed the managerial role on June 1, faces the formidable challenge of succeeding Klopp, widely regarded as one of Liverpool’s most successful managers in recent history.

Klopp’s tenure marked the end of a 30-year league title drought for Liverpool and revitalized the club’s status in European football.

He led the Reds to win several titles including the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup, and Emirates FA Cup.

The German also revolutionized their playing style into one of the most captivating in the sport.

For Liverpool supporters apprehensive about the post-Klopp era, there may be reassurance in Slot’s apparent determination to carry forward the legacy.

What did Cole Bassett say about Arne Slot?

Cole Bassett, currently playing for the Colorado Rapids, provided insights into Arne Slot’s coaching methods during their time together at Feyenoord.

Bassett revealed that Slot would often prepare the team by analyzing clips of Liverpool matches, indicating the Dutchman’s admiration for Liverpool’s playing style and Klopp’s tactical approach.

He told the Mirror: “He [Slot] introduced quite a few things to me and made me understand football a lot better.

“I’ve seen little things his teams have done, and I know what it takes to play at a top level.

“The funny thing is, he used to show us clips of Liverpool all the time.

“Liverpool were the one team he used to emphasize to us that if we wanted to play at the top level, then this is what you had to do.

“And now he’s ended up there, so I think it’s pretty special for him.

Bassett added: “I wasn’t surprised he’s ended up at a big club like Liverpool.

“I never knew whether Liverpool was his team or anything but it’s funny looking back at it now.

“He would show clips of Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz sprinting back defensively, and he’d be like ‘if you want to be at a top club, this is what you have to do’.

“It’s not like we didn’t have wingers who weren’t top players.

“We had Reiss Nelson and Luis Sinisterra, who are both now in the Premier League, but he was like ‘if you want to be at this level, watch what they’re doing, and this is what I expect of you’.

“Maybe Liverpool was one of the teams he aspired to be at, but it’s pretty funny he’s ended up there after showing us so many clips of them.”
