Liverpool’s interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz intensified this week, with the club making headlines on Wednesday, May 14, as reports emerged of direct contact between Anfield chiefs and the German playmaker’s representatives.
The 22-year-old, widely regarded as one of Europe’s most gifted young attackers, has become a focal point of the early summer transfer window, though the situation remains highly competitive and uncertain.
On Wednesday, Liverpool were reported to have held a planned meeting with Wirtz and his family in England, as the club sought to gauge the player’s interest in a move to the Premier League.
This approach coincided with similar negotiations involving Manchester City, while Bayern Munich remain long-term admirers.
While Liverpool are ready to compete for the player if he decides to leave Germany, the prevailing belief on Merseyside is that Wirtz will either stay at Leverkusen for another season or move to Bayern Munich, with the latter reportedly having received a verbal promise from the player.
However, German outlets suggest a move to Bayern is not yet a foregone conclusion, and Leverkusen would prefer to sell abroad if several bids are received.
Now Sky Sports’ Melissa Reddy has revealed how Florian Wirtz sees a Liverpool.
She claims that he would be looking to “seize an opportunity” to move away from the Bundesliga with it being thought only Bayern Munich being interested.
However, it’s also warned that the German champions and Manchester City have done the most probing so far.
Taking to X, the reporter wrote:
“Florian Wirtz, if they are encouraged to act on interest, would be looking to seize an opportunity that wasn’t expected given he was due to remain in Germany.”
“Manchester City and Bayern Munich have done the heavy pushing and pursuing thus far.”
