How Jurgen Klopp can atone for previous mistake and play a key role in Alexander Isak joining Liverpool – opinion

Liverpool may have spent big already this summer but the biggest signing is still yet to come.

The Reds are having a summer to remember and with the transfer window not closing until September 1st, they still have plenty of time to pull off some more big moves.

The biggest of them all, even after breaking the British transfer record for Florian Wirtz, would be Alexander Isak, with the Swede handing in a transfer request to try and force through a move to Anfield.

He would cost a very minimum of £120m, but Newcastle want closer to £150m, although Liverpool appear ready to go all-out to get him.

There is still a lot needing to happen before any deal materialises, however, but former boss Jurgen Klopp has a far bigger role than people realise in Isak joining the Reds, and the German might just be able to make amends after his previous error.

Although Klopp has not returned to managing since departing Liverpool in 2024, he still has a vital role to play in football, with the 58-year-old now the Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull.

In short, he oversees all the operations at the three Red Bull clubs and even advises them on their transfer strategy, and this includes helping out each club’s sporting director.

That being said, with Newcastle wanting to sign Benjamin Sesko from Leipzig, Klopp will have a say in whether the club should let this happen and, if so, how the deal should be structured.

Therefore, the German could have a huge influence in Isak joining Liverpool as if he sanctions the sale of Sesko, who is very likely the Swede’s replacement, then Newcastle can begin talks with the Reds over the sale of their star striker.

The Magpies are already in contact with the German club over signing the Slovenian, suggesting they are open to selling, with Leipzig wanting between £70m and £87m to let him go.

Of course, Newcastle will have that if they sell Isak for close to double, although they have also proven they have that type of money after their failed £70m for now-Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike.

During his nine years in charge on Merseyside, Klopp did not get many things wrong, but there is one glaringly obvious mistake that will now cost Liverpool millions and millions of pounds.

Back in 2022, Klopp rejected the chance to sign Isak and pushed hard for a move for Darwin Nunez instead, an error that does not need much explaining.

Instead, Isak joined Newcastle for £63m, which is £22m less than Nunez joined the Reds for, something Liverpool fans will be left very angry at.

Now, however, Klopp has a chance to atone for his error and help the Swede finally arrive at Anfield, even if it is three years later and for a fee over double what they would have had to pay.
