It has emerged that the Portugal FA are planning to honour Diogo Jota this week.
The football world was plunged into mourning on Thursday when news broke of the tragic deaths of Portugal and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva, 26, in a car crash on the A-52 motorway in northwestern Spain.
The 28-year-old Portuguese international was travelling along Spain’s A-52 motorway near Palacios de Sanabria when his car left the road and caught fire just after midnight, according to multiple sources.
It was only after emergency crews arrived that the devastating reality emerged: both Diogo Jota and his brother had lost their lives at the scene.
The tragedy comes just days after Jota celebrated his wedding to longtime partner Rute Cardoso in Porto on June 22, casting a shadow of grief over his family and the entire football world.
Tributes have continued to flood in from across the footballing community.
Authorities in Spain have opened an official investigation into the accident, with more details expected to emerge soon.
Preliminary comments from the Spanish government have pointed toward a burst tyre, which caused the car to lose control and ultimately catch fire.
To honour his memory, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has formally requested that UEFA hold a minute’s silence before Portugal’s opening UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 match against Spain in Bern this Thursday evening, according to the BBC.
The tribute will not only precede the Group B encounter but will also be observed at all Women’s Euro matches taking place on Thursday and Friday.
In addition, Portugal’s women players will wear black armbands as a mark of respect for the fallen star and his brother.
FPF President Fernando Gomes stated: “We have lost two champions?
The disappearance of Diogo and André Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything to honour their legacy on a daily basis
The thoughts of everyone are with Jota’s loved ones as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.
