Andy Robertson put the Reds ahead inside three minutes with Mohamed Salah doubling the lead shortly after by slotting home from close range.
Atletico fought back through a Marcos Llorente brace, with the midfielder first converting a low finish via a quick break and then heading home a corner to level the contest.
Both sides had opportunities to win it in normal time, but it was Virgil van Dijk who rose highest in the sixth minute of stoppage time to meet a corner and direct a powerful header past Oblak, sending Anfield into ecstasy and securing all three points for the hosts.
Meanwhile, Spanish media were very complimentary of Liverpool in reviewing the clash.
El Pais asserted that the Madrid side “opened their Champions League campaign with the most difficult test possible” in facing Liverpool.”
They add that Diego Simeone’s men were very unlucky and wrote “Atlético de Madrid have swum to exhaustion to finally die on the shore.”
Meanwhile, Marca assert that Atletico Madrid would have been bitterly disappointed as they would have been more than happy with a draw:
“Van Dijk flew in the umpteenth corner kick for Liverpool to win as they have won all their games this season, in the last minutes, in this case directly in extra time, and for Atlético to be left with an inch of their noses who, after threatening to knock down for a good part of the night, were already savouring what would have been an incredible draw.”
Finally, Diego Simeone gave his reaction to the defeat:
“The spirit, that’s what we needed.
