Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard hung up his boots five years ago today.

After having made 710 appearances for , Gerrard had already made the difficult decision to move on from his boyhood club the previous year.

As Gerrard embarks on his first job as a Premier League manager, his coaching career has followed Klopp’s advice - given five years ago today - to “start working at the beginning and not in the middle or the end”.

Despite coming up against former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers at Celtic, Gerrard was still able to build a team outside of the increased scrutiny of the Premier League in his first managerial job.

The heroic Reds captain won eight major honours during his time with Liverpool, before joining LA Galaxy at the end of his contract in 2015.
