Real Madrid are finalizing an unprecedented early transfer for Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the Spanish giants pushing to register the Liverpool right-back before the FIFA Club World Cup begins on June 18.
The move, initially planned as a free transfer on July 1, is tipped to be fast-tracked to ensure his participation in the tournament, sparking complex negotiations between the clubs.
Real Madrid’s campaign in the expanded 32-team Club World Cup kicks off against Al Hilal in Miami on June 184, nearly two weeks before Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool contract expires on June 30.
To avoid missing their marquee signing for the group stage, Madrid has proposed a €1 million (£850,000) compensation package to Liverpool, covering both a symbolic transfer fee and Alexander-Arnold’s final month of wages (£720,000).
This would allow the defender to join as early as June 17, aligning with FIFA’s registration window for the tournament.
The financial incentive for Madrid is clear: participation guarantees a $38.2 million (£28.6 million) base fee, rising to $87.6 million (£65.5 million) for winning the final.
Alexander-Arnold’s availability could bolster their chances and it seems they are set on bringing the right-back to the tournament.
And it seems the 26-year-old wants the same.
According to Spanish outlet AS, Alexander-Arnold has given the “green light” to Real Madrid to negotiate with Liverpool over allowing him to play at the Club World Cup.
The defender is said to be “willing to make an effort and significantly shorten his holidays” for a chance to play at the summer tournament.
The report adds:
“Real Madrid are already going to start talks with Liverpool to try to reach an agreement that releases the player at the end of this month.”
“For that to happen, they must pay Liverpool the proportional part of the player’s salary (which corresponds to the month of June, as it ends on the 30th of that month) and financially compensate the red club to loan him before the end of his contract.”
It’s believed that Los Blancos were waiting for Alexander-Arnold’s own official announcement before engaging in talks with Liverpool.
Shockingly, the Spanish giants are said to have plans to unveil the England international as soon as the first few days of June – nearly a full month before his contract at Anfield expires.
This is so that he can integrate with the team’s routine, and spend a few weeks training with his new teammates before the Club World Cup.
