There are players who looked for all the world like Liverpool players who just never joined the Reds.

One of these from recent times in Son Heung-Min, who announced on Saturday that he is set to leave Tottenham Hotspur during the current transfer window.

After joining Spurs in 2015, Son has gone on to become one of their most prolific goal scorers of the Premier League era.

A two-footed forward with an eye for goal, the South Korean would no doubt have been a big hit under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

And as he prepares to depart English football, Rousing The Kop take a look back at how close Son was to becoming a Liverpool player.

Although Liverpool were hardly short of brilliant wide forwards during the Klopp era, Son would have just added that cherry on top.

Klopp was a massive fan of Son’s, and although he was set to turn 30 in the summer of 2022, it was reported that Liverpool were weighing up the idea of a move to sign the Spurs attacker.

It was claimed that Liverpool were ‘sniffing around Son‘ in the run-up to the end of the season, as it appeared that Tottenham would not make the Champions League places.

However, Arsenal’s form collapsed, allowing their north London rivals to sneak and pinch a place in Europe’s top competition.

Had Spurs failed to overturn the Gunners, it was reported that Son would likely have left in 2022, with Liverpool seen as being a potential destination.

Seven years prior to Klopp’s interest, Liverpool were said to be interested in signing Son in the summer of 2015.

The legendary German manager was yet to arrive at Anfield, with Brendan Rodgers still in charge at the time.

Had Klopp been in situ, then perhaps Liverpool would have followed up on scouting trips and bought Son from Bayer Leverkusen.

“I know that Liverpool have scouted him several times this season and would love to have the player in their squad,” Son’s agent Thies Bliemeister told BILD in May 2015.

Ultimately, the South Korea captain ended up at Spurs, and the rest is history.
