The attacking numbers that Liverpool’s full-backs have been producing in recent years would make many think they were forwards.

The Reds’ attacking threat is not only one of the best in the Premier League, but it is also one of the most dangerous in Europe too.

However, despite having a star-studded attack, Liverpool’s threat comes from many areas of the pitch, none more so than from their full-backs.

Jurgen Klopp, and now Arne Slot, have demanded that their full-backs get forward, keep the width and deliver wicked balls into the box, something Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold could do perfectly.

However, with Atletico Madrid interest in Robertson, both players could find themselves in the Spanish capital next season, putting an end to their competition of who has the most Premier League assists.

Alexander-Arnold leads the way as the defender with the most assists since it was established in 1992, but based on how tight it is at the top of the standings, Robertson may rethink a potential Anfield exit.

Assisting a goal plays just as big a role as scoring one does, although this was left to the attackers for so many seasons.

However, defenders – specifically full-backs – have had an increased pressure to provide as the modern game developed, with Robertson and Alexander-Arnold at the forefront of this revolution.

The Englishman has the most assists of any defender in Premier League history with 64, followed by Robertson on 60, indicating that the Scotsman will break the record if he sticks around for another season.

However, Robertson probably should have broken the record this season as he only registered one assist throughout the title-winning campaign, suggesting that one year may not be enough.

Either way, he will likely remain second on this list for quite some time, with the closest current player to him being Kieran Trippier and at 34 years old, it is highly unlikely he will record another 22 assists.

As Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas might leave, the left-back role looks like Milos Kerkez’s for years to come.

Kerkez is expected to join Liverpool soon and at 21, he has six assists to his name, a figure that will likely double next season alone.

Factoring in that he could be at Liverpool for another 10 years, then he would break the record quite comfortably, an achievement that seems a matter of when and not if based on his form last season.

His attacking prowess is a key reason why the Reds are so keen for him to join and he is the perfect player to take over from the veteran Robertson, suggesting Liverpool’s left-hand side of defence is sorted for many years to come.
