As Liverpool return from their pre-season trip to Asia, all the talk has been of young starlet Rio Ngumoha.

The Reds signed Ngumoha from Chelsea amid much fanfare last summer, and handed him a first team debut in the FA Cup in January.

But while his debut last season caused plenty of excitement, the 16-year-old has taken things to another level with his performances in pre-season.

Ngumoha has been earning rave reviews left, right and centre, even scoring a lovely goal during Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Yokohama F.

The youngster’s eye-catching displays have led to an expectation that Ngumoha will feature in the Liverpool squad plenty next season.

And as he prepares for what could be a breakout season at Anfield, it has been revealed how many chances Ngumoha may have to become the youngest goal scorer in Liverpool history.

Fans should be careful they do not go overboard on Ngumoha.

But it is impossible to argue that the former Chelsea wonderkid is an incredible prospect.

It feels inevitable that he will get a chance in the first-team next term, and according to former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor, Ngumoha could make history.

Posting on X, Mellor broke down how the teenager could become the youngest ever player to score for the Liverpool senior team.

“Rio Ngumoha has until October 13th to score a competitive goal to be officially the youngest scorer for LFC,” he says.

“Comm shield, 7 Prem games, couple of CL games and also maybe that one game in League Cup to do it in.”

Although Ngumoha will likely be keen to make a first piece of history with Liverpool, this particular title is something of a poisoned chalice.

The current youngest player to find the net, for example, did not go on to have much of a Liverpool career at all.

Big things had been expected of Ben Woodburn when he struck against Leeds United aged just 17 years and 45 days in November 2016.

However, Woodburn failed to kick on and after just 11 Liverpool appearances, currently finds himself playing for League Two side Salford City aged 25.

The Reds’ second youngest scorer is Kaide Gordon, who is still with the club having also struggled to progress beyond his opening goal.

If Ngumoha can break Woodburn’s record, hopefully he will go on to have a better time of things.
