Mohamed Salah netted his second goal of the season to win Liverpool the game on Sunday.

For the fourth successive game, the Reds managed to claim all three points after a rather unconvincing performance, with yet another last-minute winner required.

And again, Salah had another game where he barely saw the ball, although his inevitability means he still managed to get on the scoresheet.

His goal meant he goes above Andy Cole in the Premier League’s all-time highest scorers list, meaning he is one step closer to the seemingly unbreakable Alan Shearer record.

However, if the Egyptian has proven anything during his time at Anfield, it is to never write him off, and with the winger still having two years left on his deal, he might fancy his chances at breaking the record.

With that said, just how many goals does Salah actually need to break Shearer’s almost-20-year record?

No matter what Salah does, he will always be regarded as not just one of Liverpool’s best ever players, but one of the Premier League’s too.

However, getting that goal record would leave nothing up for debate, and as things stand, he could get very close if he sees out his current contract.

His goal against Burnley moves him above Cole and onto 188 goals, making him the fourth-highest scoring player in the competition’s history.

That means he needs 20 more goals to overtake Wayne Rooney, 25 to go ahead of Harry Kane, and a whopping 72 to take Shearer’s record away from him.

Beating Rooney’s record is certainly achievable, perhaps even this season, but Kane’s may have to be done in the final year of his contract.

As for Shearer’s, he would likely need to extend his deal by another two years at least, especially as he is not getting any younger.

So, whether Salah does stay longer will likely depend on how close he is to the record come 2027, as if it is doable, he is the type of guy to stick around and beat it.

The way Liverpool’s game was going against Burnley, and the way Salah was playing, it would have been no surprise to see Arne Slot take the Egyptian off.

His quietness has been prominent at the start of the season, with the winger not quite looking himself, although he is still managing to contribute in the important moments.

But, as he is now 33 and has AFCON coming up in the winter, he will need to have his game time managed carefully to ensure that he avoids injury and any sort of burnout.

Liverpool have a lot of games to play too and will need every player to perform, with Salah, arguably, the most important of the lot.
