Liverpool’s pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz has entered its final phase, with wide-spread reports indicating that Liverpool and Leverkusen are on the verge of striking an agreement.

It would be a club-record deal for Liverpool as well as a Premier League record transfer that could exceed €150 million (£126.7 million).

The 22-year-old German international, widely regarded as one of Europe’s most coveted talents, has already agreed to personal terms on a five-year contract at Anfield, signaling his commitment to joining Arne Slot’s Premier League champions.

However, complexities in the payment structure means that the two clubs have been locked in talks.

It’s clear Bayer Leverkusen aim to extract maximum value for their 22-year-old talisman, and rightfully so as he is a generational talent.

A crucial element of this transfer is the allocation of training compensation.

Under FIFA rules, five percent of the total transfer fee must be distributed among the clubs that contributed to the player’s development between the ages of 12 and 23.
