Fabrizio Romano has revealed the amount Real Madrid offered Liverpool to sell Trent Alexander-Arnold in January.
After months of speculation, Alexander-Arnold finally announced his desire to leave Liverpool when his contract expires at the end of this season.
The England right-back made the heartbreaking announcement on Monday, taking to social media to say:
“After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season.”
“This is easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life.”
Alexander-Arnold’s departure severs a lifelong bond with his hometown club.
A product of Liverpool’s academy, he redefined the right-back role, amassing 92 assists – a Premier League record for defenders – and becoming vice-captain in 2023.
Shortly after his announcement, it was revealed how long his Real Madrid contract will be.
Writing for the Athletic, transfer journalist David Ornstein asserted that it would be a six-year deal:
“Alexander-Arnold is expected to join Real Madrid as a free agent, with sources in Spain — speaking anonymously to protect relationships — suggesting a proposed six-year agreement, which would start in July, is in the process of being completed.”
“A deal for the right-back, 26, to join the La Liga side has now entered its final stages and is on course to be signed in the coming weeks.”
While Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid will be in the summer, the defender could have left Liverpool in January had the club accepted Madrid’s offer during the winter transfer window.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid approached Liverpool in January about the potential of selling Alexander-Arnold in order not to lose him on a free in the summer.
“Real Madrid decided in the final weeks of December to approach Liverpool and offer them the possibility to get some money for Alexander-Arnold,” Romano said on the latest episode of the Here We Go Podcast.
The journalist also revealed that the Spanish giants offered “something around 15-20 million Euros” for the defender?
Madrid wanted Alexander-Arnold in January because of their many injuries and because “Carlo Ancelotti was pushing internally to sign a right-back already in January.”
However, Liverpool rejected Madrid’s offer because they wanted to keep their squad as they were competing for the Premier League and Champions League titles at the time.
