Liverpool spent £117million more in wages in 2019-20 than they did over the previous campaign – but their wage bill is set to plummet this season.

In other news, Shaqiri tipped to quit Anfield and sign for Premier League side after major reveal.

But the spreadsheet expert predicts that the wage bill will nosedive after a weary season in 2020-21.

That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after Liverpool revealed their salary outlay in their end-of-year report.

The club spent £325m in wages over the course of the 2019-20 financial year, a huge increase on £208m they spent in 2018-19.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “Wages increased in 2020 but I’m unconvinced they’ll go up again in 2021.

“From a financial perspective, there’s absolutely a case for saying 4th versus 5th is more valuable than 1st versus 2nd.” After sauntering to the title last season, Liverpool face a desperate race to qualify for the Champions League in 2020-21.
