The young talent initially made his reputation at French outfit Reims, where his belief in his own capabilities began to flourish, as he once challenged a coach privately to question why he wasn't playing.
The club's manager at the time, David Guion, was struck by a 17-year-old Ekitike, then appearing in the reserves, and invited him to come and train with the senior squad.
Understandably, given his age and reserve team status, Ekitike was not selected.
