A striker is the specific player that they have been tracking down all summer and they have finally got their man, with Hugo Ekitike tasked with the job of being their new number nine.
Well, number nine of sorts as Darwin Nunez currently occupies that shirt number so the Frenchman will have to pick another, unless the Uruguayan leaves of course.
Ekitike has certainly worn his fair share of numbers over the years, but there is one in particular he will likely take when he arrives at Anfield, and it has not been used since 2023.

Strangely, shirt numbers can mean an awful lot to certain players but for Ekitike, he does not seem too bothered as he has worn nine different numbers across his short career already.
However, he does not exactly have the pick of the bunch to choose from as his ‘favourites’ are already taken.
He last wore number 11 but, of course, that belongs to one man, and one man only; Mohamed Salah.

Therefore, the most likely option will be that of number 15, with this last being used by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who departed back in 2023.
The Frenchman wore this in his first season for Stade Reims B team and also donned it in his second year at Paris Saint-Germain.

No.
44 is also a very viable option as that was the last number he wore at PSG, with this once belonging to failed Liverpool wonderkid Jordan Ibe.
Of course, nothing would be confirmed until August 1st at the very earliest anyway due to the Reds’ contract with Adidas starting then, but your guess with this one is as good as ours!
Not only can Liverpool probably afford to get rid of Nunez this summer now they have signed Ekitike, but it would also be beneficial as the Frenchman can don the number nine shirt that almost all strikers want.
There is something fitting about the new centre-forward having the iconic number on the back, with it holding a lot of weight and value, especially at Anfield.
Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Ian Rush have all succeeded using it, meaning he would have big boots to fill.
After the failure of Nunez’s transfer, however, the bar is not exactly set very high, meaning that Ekitike might feel more confident if he were to get it.
