Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike was among those to react after a major update in the club’s transfer plans ahead of the new Premier League season.

It’s been a busy summer at Anfield in Arne Slot’s second window in charge, coming off his title-winning debut campaign.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed on Instagram that Liverpool have agreed a deal with Parma to sign young centre-back Giovanni Leoni.

He added that the clubs have settled on a fee of €35 million (£26m), with Leoni set to join immediately and stay at Anfield rather than being loaned out.

Manchester United and Newcastle had also shown interest in Leoni, but Liverpool moved quickly in recent days to secure their man and strengthen their defensive options.

With Jarell Quansah leaving for Bayer Leverkusen earlier this window, and Ibrahima Konate’s future still uncertain, adding a defender was always expected.

The Italy Under-19 international enjoyed a breakthrough season in Serie A last term, making 17 appearances as Parma finished 16th.

While Leoni looks set for a move, the Reds are continuing their busy summer, with a fresh move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak in the works.

Football Insider revealed Liverpool are preparing a new offer worth around £120 million for Isak and remain confident of getting a deal done.

Isak has told Newcastle he wants to explore his options elsewhere and is currently on strike, adding pressure on the club to sell their talisman — a situation Liverpool will look to capitalise on.
