Liverpool are working hard to complete a deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike this summer after Newcastle United dropped out of the race for his signature.
The Reds want to make at least two more signings, having already brought in six new players to augment their squad.
Alexander Isak appears to have been Liverpool‘s first choice.
However, Newcastle are not willing to part ways with the 25-year-old, hence the Premier League champions have moved on to Ekitike.
Arne Slot’s side want to move quickly on Ekitike and could even have a deal done and dusted by the weekend ahead of their pre-season tour in Asia.
The Frenchman has already handed in a transfer request at Frankfurt.
Manchester United are also interested in the forward, however, he prefers a move to Anfield and has agreed personal terms with the Reds.
He is now waiting for a club-to-club agreement, which is aided by Liverpool’s strong relationship with Frankfurt.
Despite ending up as the Premier League’s leading goalscorers with 86 goals, Slot’s side want to bolster their attacking options ahead of next season.
Ekitike contributed 22 goals and 12 assists across all competitions for Frankfurt last season after joining the Bundesliga club from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024.
According to German outlet Kicker, Ekitike is set to feature in a preseason friendly against FSV Frankfurt on Saturday despite Liverpool closing in on the forward.
The 23-year-old has been training with Frankfurt teammates this week and could feature in his final game before his move to Anfield in the coming weeks.
Liverpool have presented a bid to Frankfurt close to €80m for Ekitike.
