The Reds stormed into a two-goal lead inside six minutes through Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah’s clinical finish.
Atletico responded after the break when Marcos Llorente struck twice to level, but Virgil van Dijk rose highest in the 92nd minute to power home a stoppage-time winner, extending Liverpool’s streak of decisive late goals this season.
Hugo Ekitike had to be content with a role off the bench on Wednesday evening, with Alexander Isak instead being allowed to make his Liverpool debut down the middle.
The Frenchman managed 32 minutes off the bench and could be in competition for a left-wing role with Cody Gakpo as the season progresses.
But despite his limited minutes, Ekitike still had time to grab the shirt of compatriot Antoine Griezmann, showing it off on Instagram post-match and accompanying it with the caption “Légende”.
Ekitike may have to be willing to come off the bench again on Saturday against Everton depending on Arne Slot’s team selection.
The Dutch manager has already hinted that Isak could be involved in some capacity, saying post-Atletico Madrid:
“Yeah, a good start, only 60 minutes and now we have to build him up from here?
But I can tell you he is not going to play 90 again on Saturday.”
“Although he only trained for two weeks, he has so many games under his belt that he is probably more able to be ready for 60.”
“I can tell David, or you can tell David that he is not going to play 90 on Saturday.”
